Paula Rego (1935 - 2022) behoort tot de absolute top op wereldvlak. Haar (magisch -) realistische werk is sterk verbonden met de wereldliteratuur en getuigt van een sterke vrouwelijke persoonlijkheid.
In haar verhalend werk onderzoekt Rego macht, seksualiteit en de ommekeer van sociale codes. Naast haar gemaroufleerde pastels worden haar grafische werken wereldwijd erkend.
In 2009 kreeg Paula Rego haar eigen museum, het Casa das Historias Paula Rego, in Cascais (Portugal).
Haar werken bevinden zich in de collecties van: het British Museum, de Metropolitan Museum, de National Gallery, de Tate Gallery, de Gulbenkian Foundation, de National Portrait Gallery en de Saatchi Gallery.
