"Although her paintings and etchings depict a contemporary narrative, the owe much to her artistic heritage. The painting ‘ Under my Skin’, she explains, “is a combination of the symbolism of dogs and monkeys in 17th century Dutch genre painting and a circus act with animals that I saw in St Petersburg”.

Like all artists, Hanselaar has developed a personal iconography of painterly motifs: birds, apes, dogs, transparent fabrics, curtains and constricted flesh. Often casting herself in the central role, her subjects are nearly always solitary female figures, caught off and on guard, vulnerable and defiant, but always viewed with a critical eye. Heightened with erotic overtones, they are spiked with a wicked, subterranean humour.

Like her great compatriot Rembrandt, Hanselaar shares his fondness for theatrical illusion, “because there is the possibility to create within this illusion an immediate and intimate reality”.
