Pressrelease:

LIGHT AND SOUND INSTALLATION ON THE ROOF AND IN THE ASKELDER OF SINT ROMBOUTS CATHEDRAL, MECHELEN

TH I S P R O J E C T is intended to transform the vast slate roof of the nave of Sint Rombouts Cathedral, Mechelen, into an enormous layered manuscript book.

For three months, beginning on 21 March 2009, texts and images will be projected onto the roof using laser projection and a specially designed moving calligraphic fonts. The projection will take place from sunset to sunrise every day for this period, and will respect the local tradition of sounding eight division of every hour from the carillon of the tower. In principle, the laser installation will begin when the bells fall silent each day, silently taking over their time-keeping function during the night hours.

The calligraphy will be projected on the south side of the nave and sanctuary roofs, and will be clearly visible from the market square. It will be as if a vast quill pen is writing the text before our eyes.

The content of the installation will be layered, and will include the following elements:
1. The libretto by Brody Neuenschwander for the musical composition being created by Jeroen D’hoe for the soundscape in the Askelder of the St. Rombouts Tower
2. The list of tower types also created for the Askelder soundscape
3. Drawings of constellations, cosmological diagrams, and illustrations of the
movements of the spheres
4. The text: I BELIEVE I TRY TO BELIEVE I DO NOT BELIEVE

In the Askelder at the top of the Sint Rombouts Tower, composer Jeroen D’hoe and text artist Brody Neuenschwander will install a soundscape based on the eight-fold division of time symbolized by the tower’s carillon. In the oculus of the Askelder will be circular screen with a one hour video synchronized to the music. This video uses images of turning books, a dancer struggling to climb and a drawing of the cosmos to represent the struggle of man to understand his place in the universe.
